Featured Guest of Honor: Cadwell Turnbull

A debut novelist may seem like an unconventional choice for someone to honor, but calling someone like Cadwell Turnbull a debut is a misnomer and covers up all the hard work that goes into getting a novel, especially a horror novel about alien colonization set in the US-colonized Virgin Islands, published. Writers don’t appear fully formed with a publishable novel after sitting down to type at a keyboard, they work hard at their craft for years- honing their stories and developing thick skins after the millionth rewrite. The Lesson is Turnbull’s first published novel, however like many debut novelists Cadwell Turnbull’s short stories have been published for years in publications like Asimov’s Science Fiction, Nightmare Magazine, The Best American Science Fiction and Fantasy 2018, Lightspeed Magazine, The Verge, LeVar Burton Reads Podcast, and Grassroots Economic Organizing. The last publication may seem be the odd one since all of the other publications are genre mags, but Turnbull believes in solidarity economics like co-ops, worker-owned businesses, and credit unions and depicting that in fiction. In fact, Turnbull’s short story, “They Built a Wall” is the first piece of fiction featured on Grassroots Economic Organizing after he pointed out the dearth of such stories. We’re excited to have Cadwell Turnbull here to add his perspective about mosaic narratives, Caribbean speculative writers, and solidarity economics and how it can be modeled in fiction

Accessibility
  • For hotel-related accessibility needs, including lower floor, roll-in shower, or light-up doorbell, make a regular room reservation first, then fill out the Special Requests Form.
  • If you cannot stand for long periods of time and need to bypass event lines (like for Masquerade) or if you need priority seating for large events due to mobility, sight or hearing, see the Information Desk for a sticker for the back of your badge. You may also email @email for details.
  • At the convention, the Info Desk (in the Lobby, next to the elevators) will have large-print and Braille materials, including the Restaurant Guide, menus for the food trucks, and MBTA Silver Line schedules. Info Desk is open from 8:30 AM to 11:30 PM on Friday and Saturday. On Sunday it is open from 8:30 AM to 8:30 PM.
  • Arisia is happy to welcome attendees with service animals. People with allergies should note that we expect a number of attendees with dogs, so they should medicate accordingly. We also ask that everyone respect the working animals and give them appropriate space. Please do not pet or otherwise distract service animals unless invited to do so by their owners.
  • Per ADA rules, service animals are not required to be on a physical leash so long as they are under the control of their people. If you have any doubts or questions, speak to the person politely, first. If you see an animal running untended in the hotel, notify The Watch or Innkeeper staff who can coordinate with the hotel.
  • If you have any questions about accessibility or if you would like to request some sort of accommodation, please send an email message to @email. We'll try our best to accommodate your needs.
Tech
Arisia has hosted some wonderful dances in the past and we would love to do so again.
In order to do that we need volunteers in the following areas ASAP:
  • Dance Talent Wrangler
  • Dance Hall Technical Director
  • Dance Hall Sound
  • Dance Hall Lighting and Projection
If you love the dance events, please step forward and make Arisia happen. Please contact Team Arisia Services to volunteer.

Arisia TV will not be running this year.
Next ConComms
Concoms are open to anyone who wants to learn more about how the convention runs and how we make it happen every year. You can come and learn more about what's going on behind the scenes and if there's something you're interested in you can provide feedback, meet the convention staff and learn what we're planning!

The next Con Committee will be Sunday December 15th, 4:30-6:30pm at the Westin Waterfront Hotel, in Commonwealth AB.
